DIY Mug Business with Cricut Explore Air

Now that we’ve finished celebrating the New Year it’s time to get back to business. The start of the New Year brings about many goals and launching a business is one that is rewarding on all levels.

Have you ever thought about starting a business selling coffee mugs? Sure there’s tons of coffee mugs that we see all over the place. However, for the true coffee and tea lover,  you simply can never ever have too many mugs.

The Cricut Explore Air makes it quite feasible to launch your own mug business right from the comfort of your home. Here’s how:

The supplies are pretty straight forward. You would need a Cricut Explore Air, Permanent Adhesive vinyl (commonly referred to as Oracle 651), coffee mugs and some catchy phrases.

Using the Cricut Explore Air you can design your mugs right in Design Space. Design Space is the online website companion that allows Cricut Explore Air Users to design projects to print and cut with the Explore Air. With a membership you’ll have access to over 50,000 images and DIY projects.

Before you decide to launch it’s a good idea to do a little research and practice. The best way to do this is by joining some groups and watching a few YouTube tutorials.

My favorite groups on Facebook are:

Cricut Design Space
Cricut Newbies and Pros
Cricut Craft Room

All of these groups are full of information. Every question you think you might have will be answered in one of these groups. The next thing you have to consider is supplies.

Your local dollar store is a perfect place to get some starter mugs. If you’re lucky you’ll have a dollar store that carries ceramic mugs in multiple colors. If not, the standard white mugs are just as great, because you can use various color vinyl to make the catchy slogans for your mugs.

For the vinyl my go-to supply is CheapHTV.  Their prices are right on point too.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of designing your mugs then you can venture off to a wholesale supplier of the mugs. When you purchase the mugs in bulk and wholesale you end up getting a better deal overall in quality and pricing.

One of my most trusted suppliers of  wholesale mugs is Discount Mugs. They offer very competitive prices on their mugs and they offer other promotional products as well.

All in all, can you launch a mug business for less than $500.

The Cricut Explore Air retails for  $249. Excellent price for a multi use machine.

You can get a bundle of vinyl to start you off for about $100. Additionally, you can get 50 mugs from Discount Mugs for about $76. That’s a total of $425. It leaves you with $75 to purchase shipping supplies.

Most designers retail their mugs from about $15 to $25 each. So for $500 investment you stand to gain roughly $750-$1,250 in return from your initial investment. Are you convinced yet? Have questions? Go ahead and ask away.
